How to Make Quilted Pillows

In this post I am going to show you how to make a quilted pillow using my Cat on a Ledge quilt block pattern. Pillows are great because they can be made any size or shape. The larger pillow is made from four six-inch quilt blocks with some sashing and border strips. The smaller pillow is just one nine-inch quilt block.

Once you have pieced together your pillow front, choose a fabric for the pillow back and cut to the same size as the pillow front.

To make a firmer pillow, layer it as you would a quilt with batting and backing and then topstitch through the layers.  I chose to use muslin for the backing because you won’t see it once it the pillow is complete.

I quilted this pillow with a one-inch grid.  Repeat the same process for the back of the pillow. Then with front sides facing each other, pin up the sides and sew all around the perimeter leaving enough space for you to turn it right-side-out. I used a half-inch seam to sew the front and back of the pillow together.

All you need to do now is stuff it with fiber fill and sew it shut.

For smaller pillows it isn’t necessary to use batting and topstitch the pillow.

For this nine-inch cat pillow, I just cut a backing, pinned it to the quilt block right sides together and sewed it at a 3/8-inch seam. It did lose a little bit of the edges of the design, so if you are concerned about that you may want to add a border to the quilt block.

Next turn right-side-out, stuff, pin up, and sew it shut. You have a cute little pillow.
